Certified Nurse Aide

The Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) assists the professional staff by performing various resident care activities and related nonprofessional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of the residents. Responsible for the delivery of resident care as directed by an RN or LPN. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Description

The Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) assists the professional staff by performing various resident care activities and related nonprofessional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of the residents. Responsible for the delivery of resident care as directed by a Nursing Supervisor, Registered Nurse (RN), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

This position reports directly to a Nursing Supervisor, Registered Nurse (RN), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

This position is not responsible for the supervision of other employees.

Responsibilities

Answers resident call bells to determine resident needs.

Assists nurses or physicians in the provision of resident care.

Changes bed linens and/or make beds.

Demonstrates the ability to apply restraints as directed by nursing.

Documents or otherwise reports observations of resident behavior, complaints, or physical symptoms to nurses.

Prepare and serve food trays and feeds residents or assists residents to eat or drink.

Measures and records food and liquid intake or urinary and fecal output, reporting changes to nursing staff.

Observes and reports any symptoms that may require medical attention including but not limited to bruises, open wounds, or blood in urine, changes in mentation, intake and vital signs, etc.

Provides physical support to assist residents to perform daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, getting out of bed, using the toilet, standing, or walking.

Obtains and records vital signs such as temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration rate as directed by nursing.
Utilizes proper body mechanics to prevent personal injury.

Maintains resident confidentiality and does not discuss resident in public areas, such as cafeteria, hallways, elevators, etc.

Complete daily documentation on the care provided to each resident concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.

Enters resident data into database and performs simple math functions.

Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Completion of a high school, or general equivalency diploma; AND

Eighteen (18) years or older; AND

Graduation from a State-approved training program. Must have current CNA license, in good standing, with the State licensing board.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS - Applicants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and present valid proof of vaccinated status, in order to be eligible for hire at Gracedale Nursing Home. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), people are considered fully vaccinated two (2) weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series (such as Pfizer or Moderna vaccines), or two (2) weeks after a single-dose vaccine (such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine).

Upon hire employee must have a drug screening and COVID-19 testing. Employees may also be periodically tested for COVID-19 as required or recommended. In addition, Gracedale Nursing Home will follow The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements with regard to booster(s) needed for workers in health care settings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of resident care procedures in a long term care facility.

Must have skills necessary to safely and efficiently operate equipment and machines used in the performance of this job (mechanical lifts, shower equipment, adjustable chairs/beds, etc.), as well as the demonstrated ability to transfer and transport residents in wheelchair, bed, specialty chair, etc.

Proficient interpersonal relations and communication skills.

Ability to work well with geriatric patients.

Ability to complete and record documentation consistent with job requirements; cognitive skills as related to the position.

Ability to enter information into a computer database and operate a calculator

Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English to perform the duties of this position.

I. Medical Insurance
Coverage begins for the employee the first of the month following full-time employment for employees and their eligible dependents.  Cost to the employee to participate in the plans varies by the coverage selection and number of dependents; and may be subject to collective bargaining, if a union member. The employee may also elect to opt out of the County's medical insurance if proof of coverage through the spouse's employer is provided. Under this arrangement, the employee is provided with an annual $1,500.00 opt out payment.
II. Vision and Prescription
Coverage begins for the employee the first of the month following full-time employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Copayments may vary, subject to collective bargaining, if a union member. Coverage under the vision plan varies and depends upon the employee's choice of doctor and frame selection.
III. Dental Coverage
Coverage begins for the employee the first of the month following full-time employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Copayments may vary, subject to collective bargaining, if a union member.
IV. Life Insurance
A life insurance policy is afforded to full-time employees beginning on the first day of employment, unless specified differently in a collective bargaining agreement. It remains in effect as long as the employee is actively employed and terminates upon resignation or retirement. $20,000 is afforded to all eligible employees.
V. Retirement
All full-time employees and part-time employees working more than 1000 hours per year qualify for County of Northampton retirement benefits, in which employees must contribute 5% of their earnings, and employees may choose to add additional voluntary contributions, not to exceed an additional 10%.   Additionally, employees may participate in an optional deferred compensation plan [457(b)] which may provide present tax advantages and future retirement savings. Such arrangements are made directly with the providers and the County will administer payroll deductions only.

Telephone, personal computer, calculator, bedside equipment, i.e., bed pans, urinals, commodes, items of personal hygiene, beds, mattresses, walkers, wheelchairs, geri-chairs, mechanical lifts, shower equipment, adjustable   chairs/beds, disposable pads, thermometers, ice bags, stretchers, oxygen tanks, and tubes.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described in the Physical Demand Ratings document (copy attached) are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The Certified Nurse Aide helps use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach forward with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, or crouch. Will help residents with transferring, raising residents in beds and turning and repositioning immobile residents.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works mainly in a patient-care environment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud in patient-care areas.
